The Brantford and District Labour Council (BDLC) are getting ready to take over Icomm Drive for the 66th annual soap box derby on Monday, September 5.
The event was originally scheduled to take place in May for International Workers’ Day, but rainy weather created dangerous racing conditions leading to its postponement.
The first soap box derby was held in 1956, and the BDLC has kept the tradition alive ever since. The event was postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group is encouraging the community to get involved in the event, with their kids and grandkids.
“If your kids have aged out of the race and a car is sitting in your garage or shed, think about handing it down to a neighborhood kid for the next generation of racers to use and continue the tradition,” the BDLC said on their website.
Participants are guaranteed two races down Icomm Drive, starting at Colborne Street. The track includes a sweeping curve down the hill to the finish line at the main entrance to the casino.
The derby is open to participants 12 and under, but must reside in Brant, Halidmand or Norfolk County.
Piston Pushers Car Club will be at the event awarding trophies for participation in appearance and originality. There will also be hot rods and classic cars on site.
Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. and the first race kicks off at 9 a.m.
