Brant County participates in annual emergency exercise

County of BrantBrant County participates in annual emergency exercise

The County of Brant Emergency Operations Centre team took part in their annual emergency exercise on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

The simulated incident was a major collision along Highway 403, caused by heavy fog and rain. As part of the day’s activities, a reception centre was created at the Brant Sports Complex to offer assistance to those stranded at the scene, and a mock press conference was held.

The exercise included David Bailey, Mayor for the County of Brant, staff members, the County of Brant Fire Department, Brant-Brantford Paramedics, as well as representatives from OPP, Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) and the Grand River Conservation Authority.

“Planning for an emergency is incredibly important for County Council and staff. These exercises not only allow us to practice but also assist us in finding areas that we may need to improve,” said Mayor Bailey. “If an emergency happens, we want to be able to provide the best support to our community. Having the tools, knowledge and training to assist can make all of the difference.”

“I am very proud of the Emergency Operations Centre team,” said Alison Newton, Chief Administrative Officer for the County of Brant. “These exercises can be challenging at times, but they ultimately bring staff members together in support of a common goal. I have full confidence in our team’s ability to handle an emergency.”

The County of Brant is required under the Ontario Regulation 380/04 to engage in annual emergency training. Undertaking an annual exercise and having key personnel participating in training is a key component of being prepared and building Brant’s resiliency.
