The Brantford Public Library has introduced a new area designed for teens aged 13 to 18, at the main branch of the library.

The space is located on the second floor of the downtown library, and includes flexible furniture, book displays, and several activities.

It also includes a commemorative mural, inspired by Caroline Freibauer, a long-standing Brantford Public Library Board member who passed away in 2022.

“The Board felt strongly about honouring Caroline’s contributions in a lasting way,” explained Marion McGeein, Board Chair of the Brantford Public Library. “This is a fitting tribute because she was a passionate advocate for both youth and libraries.”

The mural was commissioned to depict themes of stories, curiosity, discovery, imagination, and continuous learning, and includes a representation of Freibauer.

The new space was funded entirely through donations made to the library, with a substantial portion coming from donors who gave specifically in Freibauer’s memory.

The planning stage of the project included consultations with local youth, and tours of engaging youth spaces at other locations.

“The team of library staff who worked on the project listened to youth and sought to bring their ideas and interests into the space,” said Rae-Lynne Aramburo, the library’s CEO and Chief Librarian.

“We’ve always had collections that appeal to teens,” continued Aramburo. “With the launch of the new space, we’re also looking to elevate other services for this age group. We’re working on new program ideas, including a revised youth volunteer program.” Upcoming youth program information will be shared through the Library’s website and social media.”

The area is located close to the service desk on the library’s main floor, so if anyone has questions about what is available or how to use it, staff are nearby to help. From now until the end of June, teens who visit the new space can enter a ballot to win a prize.
