Brantford Red Sox earned their first win at Arnold Anderson Stadium this season after defeating the Kitchener Panthers 2-1 on Sunday, June 8, 2024.
Jeremias Sucre got the start for the Red Sox and had a solid first inning. After allowing a leadoff single to Panthers CF Blake Jacklin, Sucre recorded his first strikeout of the game. Jacklin was then thrown out by Red Sox C Kieran Bowles while trying to steal third for the second out and Sucre finished the inning by striking out Panthers DH Ryan Burnside to end the inning.
Brantford got to Kitchener SP Dakota Parsons getting two singles in the bottom half of the first but couldn’t cash them in after a strikeout and a couple of ground ball outs to keep things at zero after one full inning.
Both teams remained locked in a pitchers duel through the first four innings but the Red Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sox 2B Jaret Lupton led off the inning with a single, then advanced to second after a balk by Parsons, and went to third base after another balk by Parons and was then driven in after a single by LF Vaibhav Desai to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Sucre had a good sixth inning, getting all three batters out in succession and in the bottom half of the sixth, the Sox couldn’t capitalize on an error and a hit as they carried the 1-0 lead into the seventh. The Panthers finally got to Sucre in the top half of seventh after a leadoff double by Kitchener 3B Raul Gonzalez, who scored two batters later to tie things at one.
The Red Sox responded in the bottom half, capitalizing on an error, single and walk to regain their one-run lead after a single by CF Ethan Paulos.
The Sox bullpen shut things down the rest of the way as Brantford won 2-1 for their victory at home this season. Sucre tossed seven innings, only allowing four hits and an earned run, while striking out seven.
The Red Sox next home game is Friday, June 14 when the Guelph Royals come to town for an 8:00 p.m. game.
