A call to unity for Canada

ColumnA call to unity for Canada

Dear Fellow Canadians,

January 31, 2025, marked a pivotal moment in our nation’s history; a date that will resonate for years to come. As I prepare to step back from my commentary for a while, I find myself reflecting deeply on my political beliefs and the patriotic vision I hold for our great country.

When I began sharing my thoughts on platforms like LinkedIn, my goal was to engage in thoughtful, non-partisan discourse, focusing on the professional landscape of both the United States and Canada. I have always aimed to critique all political parties with equal fervor. Yet, as the host of a non-partisan political show, I struggle to contain my thoughts and fears in the face of the challenges we now confront.

My journey began against my father’s wishes, as I pursued a university education in political science and history, subjects that ignited my passion. I engaged in student government, hosted United Nations conferences, and volunteered for political campaigns. These experiences were driven by my commitment to the welfare of my fellow Canadians. However, the collision of living history with the narratives of the past now fills me with trepidation.

Today, as we watch events unfold south of our border, we see a political leader whose ambition threatens not only humanity but the very bonds of friendship between allies. We stand at a crossroads reminiscent of 1938 Munich, where the ominous message of appeasement led to one of history’s darkest chapters. We must remember the lessons of the past; concessions can lead to devastation, and history has shown us the dire consequences of inaction.

As I reflect on the bravery of young Polish and Czechoslovakian pilots who took to the skies in 1939, I feel compelled to urge you all that we face a rise in authoritarianism, and while I do not advocate for violence or rebellion, sacrifices are on the horizon. We may be forced to confront a resurgence of forces that seek to divide and conquer.

I implore all Canadians, regardless of political affiliation, to unite in this critical moment. It matters not which party holds power; what is paramount is our collective strength. The first motion we must advocate for in Parliament is one of unification, an unequivocal declaration that we stand together as one nation. The second motion must serve as a clarion call, a statement of awareness aimed at this administration that seeks to polarize us. And finally, we must advocate for a coalition government that transcends all party lines, fostering collaboration for the greater good of our nation.

Now is not the time for an election, that can come when it is scheduled in the fall when the Canadian people can see who stood up and who did not, and who deserves to represent us.

Now is the time for action, for solidarity, and for the future of Canada. Let us rise together, united in purpose, to protect our values and our way of life.

Yours in solidarity,

Andy Straisfeld
