Local singing duo Esther and Ezekiel had their journey on Canada’s Got Talent cut short after their semi final performance on Tuesday, May 10.
In their semi-final performance the siblings, who recently moved to Canada from Uganda, performed Calum Scott’s You Are The Reason dedicated to their mother.
The judges were moved to tears with the performance, but ultimately decided not to send the siblings through to the finale. Fans at home had one more chance to save the singers with the public vote, but Esther and Ezekiel did not make the cut.
The Canada’s Got Talent live finale aired on Tuesday, May 17 at the Avalon Theatre in Niagara Falls.
Eight acts performed to a live studio audience, including Brant Beacon staff. In addition to the studio audience, the acts also had to impress the panel of judges including Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Trish Stratus and Kardinal Offishall.
Not only did finalists have to entertain Canadians at home and this season’s judges, they also had a special guest to impress.
For the first time on any international “Got Talent” show, creator Simon Cowell sat on the judges’ panel to see if Canada really does have talent.
Cowell described the evening as “extraordinary,” mentioning that he really did not know what to expect coming into the show.
This season’s finalists hailed from Vancouver, B.C. to St. John’s, Newfoundland and everywhere in between. The finale welcomed eight performers to the stage, four chosen by the judges and four chosen by a public vote.
The finale was made up of three singers; Stacey Kay, Kellie Loder and Jeanick Fournier; three dance groups; GRVMNT, Shadow Entertainment and The Renegades; Savio Joseph, a musician; and comedian Courtney Gilmour.
After a number of moving stories and performances, host Lindsay Ell narrowed the acts down to a final three. The Renegades from Toronto claimed third place and Kelli Loder and Jeanick Fournier anxiously waited to see what was going to be crowned the winner.
After moments of anticipation, Ell announced that Quebec singer Fournier was the winner of Canada’s Got Talent. Fournier shared her story of being a palliative care nurse and adopting two young children with Down Syndrome. The powerhouse vocalist performed her rendition of Queen’s The Show Must Go On that brought the Avalon Theatre to their feet.
At the end of the show, Ell confirmed that Canada’s Got Talent would be returning for another season.
