The Valour Day memorial and parade, hosted by the 56th Field Artillery Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery, took place at the Cenotaph in Brantford on Saturday, September 24, 2022.
Over 50 residents attended the event, some of whom were former members of the regiment and veterans.
As part of its event, the 56th Field Artillery Regiment established strong community connections with Brantford’s citizens. Guests engaged in meaningful conversations with members of the regiment throughout the event.
The parade consisted of members of the regiment marching to and from the Sergeant William Merrifield VC Armoury.
Captain Sal Abbruscato, the operations officer, hosted and emceed the memorial.
The ceremony began with the playing of “O Canada,” followed by historical facts about Sargent William Merrifield, a man known for his bravery and loyalty to his country.
Paul Williamson made a heartfelt speech and celebrated the “mighty people who fought for our country.”
Following the playing of “The Last Post,” a moment of silence was observed to honor former Canadian soldiers.
The ceremony ended with members of the 56th Field Artillery Regiment marching back to their armoury.
