Brantford’s Clock has been repaired to full working order after a restoration project over the last couple of months.
During the City Hall reconstruction project, the iconic clock at the top of the building was inspected and at the time did not pose an immediate risk to public safety, however a more recent inspection identified several pieces of acrylic and glass in the clock dials had cracked, and some have already fallen off and broken away.
To ensure public safety, restoration work was completed to prevent the larger pieces falling to the ground. While completing this work, the clock mechanisms were modernized to working order through replacement of the clock faces, clock hands, panes and caulking.
“This is such an iconic focal point of the City’s downtown and an important part of our history,” said Mayor Davis. “I’m so pleased that the clock has been restored to safe working order and is reliably telling the time again. I’ve heard from so many in our community that are proud of the restorative work that’s been done to the new City Hall building and the fact that its legacy of public service will continue for another hundred years.”
Tower Bell
With restoration of the original Tower Bell expected to be completed in spring 2023, the City plans to facilitate a public engagement campaign in January 2023 whereby residents and businesses will be asked to weigh in on when/how often the bell should chime. Public input will be important to informing a plan for when the bell rings out.
Brantford’s City Hall was built between 1913 and 1915, when the building was originally constructed as a federal post office.
