Brantford Police announce partnership to deter theft

Brantford Police ServiceBrantford Police announce partnership to deter theft

The Brantford Police Service has seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts. Through a community partnership with Midas Brantford, APC, and Crime Stoppers Brant-Brantford, it is our goal to create awareness of this issue and work to boost crime prevention efforts.

A catalytic converter is a part of a vehicle’s exhaust system which reduces polluting emissions. They contain precious metals which make them valuable to thieves. Over the last four years, the Brantford Police Service has received nearly 300 reports of stolen catalytic converters.

Midas Brantford, is offering a new theft deterrent technique specific to catalytic converters, which involves a specialized, bright paint and engraving of the converters. Paint and engraving tools are generously being provided by APC.

Offered free to the community, Midas Brantford, is providing a limited number of appointments to members of the public to help deter thefts of catalytic converters. Appointments for businesses (at a nominal cost) will be available in the future.

Appointments are limited and are being offered Saturday, March 11, and Monday, March 13, 2023. Appointments will be offered on a first come-first serve basis. There is no cost to participate. Future appointments may be offered at a later date.

“Midas shops are locally owned and operated. As part of the community, we want to ignite change all around us. We’re happy to assist the residents of Brantford and the Brantford Police Service to crack down on catalytic converter theft and make our community a touch better,” said Susan McDougall of Midas Brantford.

Collaboration is an essential component of community safety and well-being. Our front-line officers and personnel of the Brantford Police Service work in collaboration with citizens, the business community, other first responders, members of government, and other community leaders to continually promote community safety. Crime prevention is a shared responsibility.

“Crime prevention is a key priority of the Brantford Police Service. Innovative partnerships like this theft deterrent program, are another way we can serve our community. Catalytic converter thefts are costly, and our goal is to help create awareness of this problem and ultimately, prevent thefts,” said Robin Matthews-Osmond, BPS Corporate Communications Manager.
