Brant OPP charge 13 during Move Over campaign

Brant OPPBrant OPP charge 13 during Move Over campaign

Police laid 13 charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) during a “mini-blitz” on Highway 403 in the County of Brant on Monday, February 27, 2023.

Between 9:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Brant County Detachment conducted move over enforcement on Highway 403 in the County of Brant. Officers conducted several traffic stops resulting in 13 total charges.

The charges included the following offences:

·        Driving While under Suspension,

·        Operate Motor Vehicle – No Insurance,

·        Fail to Move into Another Lane for Emergency Vehicle or Tow Truck,

·        Fail to Slow Down and Proceed With Caution for Emergency Vehicle or Tow Truck,

·        Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence,

·        Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit and

·        Fail to Produce Permit.

Ontario’s Move Over law serves to protect police, other emergency services and tow truck personnel who are parked or stopped on the roadside to carry out their work.

The law requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of a highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires the driver to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle if it can be done safely.

The OPP conducts targeted education and enforcement campaigns in their ongoing efforts to increase awareness of Ontario’s Move Over Law.
