Starting July 1, Ontario will move to an automatic license plate renewal system.
Under the new automatic renewal system, drivers will no longer have to manually renew their passenger vehicle licence plates at Service Ontario centres or online.
Vehicle owners will also now be able to sign up for digital notifications from Service Ontario about issues relating to the automatic renewal.
If your plates are clean with no outstanding fines or tolls, they will be automatically renewed 90 days before their expiry date at no charge.
However, you will be notified either online or by mail if there are outstanding fines or tolls.
If that’s the case, you would then have to manually renew online or visit a Service Ontario centre in person.
“We’re saving drivers valuable time and making their lives easier by automatically renewing licence plates,” said Prabmeet Sakaria, Transportation Minister, while unveiling the news in Waterdown on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
In 2022, the provincial government announced the elimination of licence plate sticker fees.
Until now, drivers still had to manually ensure they renewed their plates or risked a potential $85 fine under the Highway Traffic Act.
