A flag-raising ceremony at Harmony Square in downtown Brantford on Oct. 11 marked the declaration of October as Probus Month in Brantford.
Probus is a worldwide non-profit organization that offers fun, friendship and fellowship for retired or semi-retired people. The clubs are all about socializing with other retirees in the community and encouraging healthy minds and bodies. Club members meet regularly to listen to speakers and take part in other activities ranging from book clubs to international travel.
Donna Potoczek, president of the Grand River Women’s Probus Club, said the Probus Month declaration “is an opportunity to spread awareness and encourage new members to join.”
Mayor Kevin Davis, who joined Potoczek in raising the flag, told about 20 Probus members that the event is a way for the city to encourage the development of clubs and organizations serving the community.
There are four Probus clubs in the Brantford-Brant area with almost 500 members. The four clubs are the Central Brant Women’s Probus Club, the Probus Club of Brantford, the Telephone City Women’s Probus Club and the Grand River Women’s Probus Club.
