Brantford Food Bank hosting Thanks 4 Giving Food Drive

Local NewsBrantford Food Bank hosting Thanks 4 Giving Food Drive

Brantford Food Bank is hosting it’s annual “Thanks 4 Giving” Food Drive throughout the month of October.

Businesses, community groups, families and individuals are encouraged to gather food donations throughout October to help the Food Bank reach its goal of 30,000 pounds of food by the end of the month.

“It’s been a trying time”, said Heather Vanner, Executive Director of the Brantford Food Bank. “We look to the fall and the launch of this important  food drive to help us restock our shelves. Our food supply is quite low. Food is being distributed as fast as it’s coming in.”

The Brantford Food Bank is supporting close to 1,300 households each month. One-third of the people supported are children. The Food Bank is also serving many single individuals needing food support, including seniors.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that almost one in ten people in our community are needing food support right now. We are not seeing any relief as the demand for service continues to stay extremely high. Supplies are not able to keep up with demand, and for the first time in years we have had to review our distribution limits and reduce what we can give to each household”, Vanner explained.

“We have a generous community that can help make a difference in the lives of the people needing food support.  Donations to the Food Bank support local residents who are coming to us for help”, added Vanner. “The need in our community continues to be great.”

The Brantford Food Bank offers emergency food support and provides people with a three to five-day supply of food, once per month. It also operates the Community Food Share Network that supports 18 other community food and meal programs.

Donations of non-perishable canned items most needed include: canned soups, canned vegetables and fruit, peanut butter, dry pasta and rice, cereal, canned pasta, beans, tuna, and stews. Baby food and formula are also needed.  Fresh product donations can include fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy and protein products.

Donations of non-perishable food can be made at most local grocery stores and all donations can be accepted at the Food Bank Warehouse at 111 Sherwood Dr. Warehouse donations can be made each day from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

If you, your family, your business, or your work place are interested in hosting a Food Drive or making a monetary  donation, throughout the month of October, please go to our website at www.crs-help.ca to register or make a financial  contribution.
