BaseballBrantford Red Sox snap six-game losing streak

Jeremias Sucre pitched six solid innings in relief, and the five-run outburst in the fourth inning was enough for the Brantford Red Sox as they survived a late Hamilton Cardinals rally for a 6-5 win on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Hamilton scored first in the opening inning, courtesy of an RBI single from Luis Bernardo. Brantford responded with a run as Nick Burdett’s outfield single brought home Gus Wilson.

The Cardinals’ offence brought in three runs the next inning with back-to-back two-out hits, first on an RBI double from Tyler Duncan and an RBI single by Tyler Rumpel, giving the Cardinals a 4-1 lead through two innings of play.

Red Sox SS Gus Wilson swings for a double in the first inning against the Hamilton Cardinals on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Red Sox starting pitcher Isiah Ramos was relieved with one out in the third for Kyle Nash, who would then retire the side to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, the Red Sox offence came alive with five runs, the first four of which came before the Cardinals recorded an out. The downpour started with Marcos Castillo hitting a bases-loaded RBI single.

Jaret Lupton got the Red Sox within a run with an RBI single of his own, but the Red Sox took the lead on a Hamilton defensive error, leading to Castillo and Ethan Paulos scoring on the play.

Red Sox 3B Stephen Whalen stands at second base following a base hit from DH Kieran Bowles in the second inning against the Hamilton Cardinals on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

After Gus Wilson scored from second base off a Jeremie Veilleux single, the Red Sox led 6-4 through four innings.

Jeremias Sucre came on to pitch for the Red Sox in the fourth inning. From the fourth through the eighth inning, Sucre mowed down the Cardinal’s offence with six strikeouts and, at one point, retired nine batters in a row.

In the ninth, the Cardinals chipped away with the deficit, courtesy of an RBI base hit from Cole Iantomasi. The visitors were pressing for the tying run, but Sucre managed to pull out a gutsy end to the ball game as he forced Connor Hicks to ground out.

Sucre (5-2) earned the win after pitching six innings out of the bullpen, striking out seven Cardinals batters while giving up one run with four hits. Ramos pitched over two innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits, one walk and a strikeout.
