Brantford to host Fall Litter Clean Up Event in October

City of BrantfordBrantford to host Fall Litter Clean Up Event in October

The City of Brantford will be hosting the next community-wide clean up event, Let’s Clean our City, on Friday, October 27, 2023 and Saturday, October 28, 2023 to help protect local wildlife from plastic pollution and reduce waste as part of Circular Economy Month.

Circular Economy Month is Canada’s first-ever public awareness campaign dedicated to educating and empowering Canadians to support an economy that protects the planet and prioritizes people through waste reduction and circular solutions. The Fall Litter Clean Up event was funded by a grant awarded to the City by the Province of Ontario from the Great Lakes Local Action Fund which supports the cleanup of local waterfronts to improve human health and protect wildlife from plastic pollution.

“I invite all residents to come together to take practical steps towards a cleaner, greener future for ourselves and future generations,” said Kevin Davis, Mayor for the City of Brantford. “Participating in the City’s Fall Litter Clean Up event is a great way to make a difference in our community.”

The Fall Litter Clean Up event follows the success of the Spring Litter Clean Up event that took place on Earth Day, where over 2,500 residents participated. Volunteers and City staff collected a total of 630 kilograms of litter with 240 kilograms being diverted from the landfill by recycling.

Individuals, groups, neighbourhood associations, and organizations are invited to register online for a free clean up kit and to indicate their location of clean up. Residents are encouraged to use their own reusable gloves but clean up kits that include one large garbage bag, one large clear recycling bag, a pair of gloves, and information on how to dispose of different materials will be available for registrants to pick-up at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, 254 North Park Street, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Monday, October 23 until Friday, October 27.

Individuals can leave their collected litter at the curbside with their regular garbage pick-up if it is under five bags in total. Groups or larger clean ups can bring the collected garbage to one of three disposal locations where City of Brantford staff will dispose of it for you between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. To participate in the litter pick-up event and to receive your clean up kit, register at Brantford.ca/CleanBrantford by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023. Participants are also encouraged to share photos of their efforts on social media by tagging the City of Brantford and using the hashtag #CleanBrantford.
