The County of Brant announced the development of a Trails and Open Space Master Plan for the “North of the Nith” area on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
This beautiful natural peninsula, located along the north side of the Nith River near Paris, spans over 200 acres and is largely forested with diverse natural features. Currently, the area is enjoyed informally by community members for recreation and includes natural features like wetlands, floodplains, and the Nith River, which supports species at risk.
“Our community is fortunate to have such a beautiful natural area right in our backyard,” said David Bailey, Mayor for the County of Brant. “The Trails and Open Space Master Plan for the North of the Nith will ensure that we protect this space while also making it accessible for residents and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.”
The purpose of this Master Plan is to create a balanced vision for the future of North of the Nith that respects the natural environment, provides opportunities for education, enhances recreational opportunities, and celebrates the history of the Nith River. The final plan will include a concept plan and phased implementation strategy to guide the long-term development of this unique natural space.
“This Master Plan is an important step in creating a connected and sustainable trail network in the County of Brant,” said Stacey Ellins, Director of Parks and Recreation for the County of Brant. “We are committed to working with the public and our community partners to develop a plan that balances recreation with environmental stewardship. Their input will be crucial in shaping the future of this space.”
The public is encouraged to visit the Engage Brant website at www.EngageBrant.ca/NorthOfTheNith to learn more about the North of the Nith Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan and share their feedback through an online survey, and provide comments and questions about the plan. The public is also invited to attend the pop-up in the park event on Saturday, September 14 at Paris Lions Park, 60 Laurel Street in Paris, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Paper copies of the survey are also available at County of Brant Customer Service Offices and for those that prefer, the survey can also be completed over the phone by calling 1.855.44BRANT (1.855.442.7268) until Friday, October 11 at 4:30 pm.
