The Niagara Falls’ Rainbow Bridge has been closed following what witnesses describe as a vehicle “explosion” at the border crossing.
FBI officials in Buffalo say they are “investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge”. Investigators there say further information is not being shared at this time due to the “fluid” nature of the incident.
The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is currently monitoring all points of entry to New York, according to a statement made by state Governor Kathy Hochul.
In a video shared to social media, Ontario Provincial Police say that both the Rainbow Bridge is closed in both directions as Niagara police and Canadian border police investigate an “incident” in the area.
OPP say that the Fort Erie Peace Bridge also has been closed “all crossings coming to or leaving Canada.”
Additional closures are being implemented on Highway 405 and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
Heavy delays should be anticipated in the Niagara area as a result and OPP are advising that all planned travel across the border be delayed until crossings are re-opened.
The Office of the Mayor in Niagara Falls, N.Y. says the closure will remain in effect ”until further notice”.
Smoke could be seen filling the air surrounding the Bridge in videos shared to social media by witnesses on the scene.
