On October 14, Roshan James will host a free spoken word and open mic event, performing material from her new collection, ‘Pink Moon’ at the Paris Bohemian Gallery in Paris, Ontario. This event is part of Brant County’s celebration of Culture Days.
The ‘Pink Moon’ collection is described as “part anthem of decolonization, part oracle of the times.” Growing up in the South Asian diaspora, but feeling disconnected from her cultural roots, Roshan makes peace with the tension between her self-identities through poetry.
For the open mic night, Roshan invites local poets to join in sharing their work. She is excited to connect with other literary artists in Brant County, specifically Indigenous, Black, and racialized writers, those who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, those who experience disabilities, and folks who are experiencing houselessness. The open mic night will be a time to sit together, share stories, and explore life in the community, focusing on voices that have been previously marginalized, othered, or out-right silenced by mainstream media.
