Why I am a proud Conservative but will be voting for someone else

Conservatism, at its best, is about balance, preserving essential values while adapting to the needs of the times. This vision was exemplified by leaders like Joe Clark and Jean Charest. Their brand of conservatism was grounded in pragmatic solutions and a respect for democratic institutions. They championed policies that supported individual freedoms while also ensuring a robust and inclusive society.

In stark contrast, the current direction of the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre deviates sharply from this legacy. Poilievre’s approach, characterized by aggressive rhetoric and divisive tactics, has strayed from the progressive conservative tradition. His focus on inflaming partisan divides and exploiting public grievances seems more aimed at scoring political points than fostering constructive dialogue or addressing real issues.

The tactics employed by Poilievre and his allies, from inflammatory statements to outright denial of scientific consensus, are troubling. They prioritize short-term gains over long-term stability, neglecting the responsibility of leadership to guide with integrity and respect. This confrontational style not only alienates moderate voters but also undermines the credibility of the conservative movement as a whole.

As a proud conservative, I find it essential to uphold the values that have historically defined our party: respect for democratic norms, commitment to effective governance, and a balanced approach to policy-making. The current trajectory under Poilievre does not reflect these principles. It is not merely a matter of political strategy but of maintaining the integrity and values of conservatism.

Thus, while I remain deeply committed to conservative principles, I am compelled to seek leadership that aligns more closely with the legacy of pragmatic, respectful governance that Clark and Charest embodied. My vote will reflect a desire for a conservative future that honors tradition while embracing thoughtful, inclusive progress.
