Preparations begin for demolition of County property

County of BrantPreparations begin for demolition of County property

The County of Brant is preparing to demolish the building located at 2 Beverly Street West in St. George.

From mid-July to mid-August, community members may notice a number of activities taking place at the site to prepare for demolition including fencing, site cleanup and hazardous waste removal. Please park away from the area.

Demolition of the building is expected to be complete by mid-September.

The new space will offer a large parking lot and the area will be beautified.

Following the County’s purchase of 2 Beverly Street West in St. George, Council directed that a public engagement process be held to see if community members had any concerns with the County’s plan to demolish the automotive repair shop on the property to create a large parking lot. This option was estimated to cost $397,000. A second option was also presented to restore the Supertest gas station, built in the 1930s, costing $757,000.

Following the end of the public consultation period, it was determined that the community preferred the first option; to demolish the buildings, create a larger parking lot, and beautify the area. 84% of those who responded wished to see more parking in downtown St. George.

In support of the community’s comments, Council approved option 1 to demolish the existing buildings, create a larger parking lot, and beautify the area.
