The dangerous consequences of voting Conservative

ColumnThe dangerous consequences of voting Conservative

A recent Angus Reid poll reveals a stark truth about Canada’s political future. The vast majority of Canadians remain resolute in their rejection of U.S. annexation, a sentiment that is deeply ingrained in our national identity. However, a concerning trend has emerged in Canadian politics, one that threatens to undermine our sovereignty in ways many voters may not yet realize. If Canadians fall for the Conservative Party’s “Canada First” rhetoric, we could be setting ourselves up for a dangerous path towards being absorbed into the United States.

While the poll shows a significant divide between Canadian attitudes and the allure of U.S. governance, it also underscores a growing divide within American society itself, particularly around the divisive figure of Donald Trump. This is not a mere ideological difference, but a growing chasm between two cultures: one rooted in a democratic tradition, the other led by populist and authoritarian impulses. If Canadians fail to see the bigger picture, the rising popularity of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre could inadvertently pave the way for policies that align us more with the United States, and less with our own national values.

Poilievre’s “Canada First” mantra may sound patriotic at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it is increasingly clear that Conservative policies risk eroding Canada’s independence and aligning us with American interests; many of which are in direct opposition to Canadian values. Conservatives under Poilievre have been criticized for courting American-style politics, often at the expense of Canadian identity. We must not be fooled by empty slogans; a vote for Poilievre’s Conservatives is a vote for a government more interested in fostering closer ties with the U.S. than preserving Canada’s sovereignty.

The trend toward American-style conservatism is not a mere political shift; it is a dangerous step toward undermining our sovereignty and national identity. If we continue down this road, we may find ourselves, unwittingly, in a political arrangement that sacrifices Canada’s future for the benefit of our southern neighbor.

Canadians must remain vigilant. Our future, and our independence, depend on rejecting political ideologies that risk surrendering our national identity for short-term gain. Let’s not be fooled—our resolve to say “no” to U.S. annexation must remain firm, especially when the stakes are so high.
